I travel frequently for business and personal reasons and often bring my HP Pavilion dv9823cl 17" widescreen computer with me. My large computer doesn't fit in a standard-size backpack. So when I fly and carry on my luggage, I end up with three bags - a backpack with my purse and electronic items inside, a computer sleeve with handles, and a suitcase - one too many items to comply with carry-on rules. Sometimes the airline and airport staff make a big deal about this. I wanted a new backpack that would fit my computer AND my purse contents AND my electronic items like chargers AND some magazines AND my snacks AND will fit under the airplane seat in front of me. So far, this bag looks like it will work!

I like the color (black with yellow trim) because it's conservative enough for business, hides dirt, and still stands out from all-black generic stuff. I like the design because it's low-profile on my back and doesn't stick out too far like my old backpack did. It does make me look like a turtle, but then again all backpacks make people kind of look like turtles. I was hesitant about the backwards opening that makes it more secure because I had never seen a design like that before. Although it makes it a little more difficult to slide my computer in and out because I have to maneuver the computer through the straps to get to the pocket, it is a small price to pay for security. The main compartment where the computer goes opens wide but not wide enough to where everything falls out. By "everything" I mean the two large mesh zip bags that are included and Velcro-ed in place in the main compartment. I use those bags to store my full-size mouse and chargers (for cell phone, cell phone earbud, digital camera, computer) and valuables (wallet, cell phone, digital camera, GPS). I can also put one or two Eagle Pack-It tubes (full size or half size) inside before zipping up the compartment. There's still a little more room for two stuffed small Ziplocs for my travel-size liquids and snacks, a magazine or two, and maybe a bottle of water and a scarf. The bag feels well placed on my back, as other reviewers have said. However, it hangs low because I am a petite 5'2". But it is not uncomfortable. In addition, the carry handle on top is sturdy and thick, which is important because when fully loaded my bag feels like it weighs at least 10 lbs, maybe even 20 lbs, and I frequently hang it from hooks in bathroom stalls when traveling. I don't use the little pocket for the MP3 player.

I have yet to test whether it will fit under the airplane seat in front of me, but I am already sold on this backpack. My previous backpack, an REI Big Byte, served me well for 10 years, but with my huge computer, I needed a different backpack. If you are looking for a low cost and super light-weight alternative to other "brand name" (and expensive) covers currently offered, this cover is for you. I ordered this on Sunday afternoon and received it today (Wednesday morning). While this case is not leather and not heavily cushioned, it is very light (approx. 3 oz.), slim, and my Kindle 2 (with a skin) fits in securely. The top and bottom corner straps on the left side do not have elastic while the top and right side corners do; I think this functions for a more secure installation. The left side of the cover folds back behind the right side for easy, non-bulky one-handed holding and reading. The snap closure works as it should, closing easily and adding more security.

I have an M-edge Go cover and while it's nicely made and leather, at just under 7.5 ounces - which may not seem like much - feels to me like it adds a lot of weight to the Kindle and it doesn't have a snap or magnetic closure so if you carry the cover in your handbag/purse, or something similar, the cover can still open and the Kindle can be scratched by other things inside. All the other M-edge products and virtually all other covers I see currently available weigh even more than 7.5 oz, have wider dimensions, and can be quite expensive.

This Kindle 2 cover from ereadercenter is a functional, light-weight, comfortable-to-hold, and inexpensive alternative. Their customer service is top notch and I am told they will very soon be offering more covers and sleeves for both the Kindle 2 and the DX. I like this skin, but it doesn't cover the sides of the Kindle 2 completely. You can still see a very slim white border on the front and a silver border on back. It still looks nice and provides surface protection like it should. I think I will get a different skin that has a white background once I get tired of this Van Gogh so as to have the bordered sides that aren't covered up blend in with the skin itself. Overall, this skin is worth $14.99, and it was fairly easy to apply and reapply with no sticky residue left on the Kindle 2 when it's lifted off again and again. I had to lift it off and stretch it just a little to get the keyboard holes lined up correctly, but the whole process only took me about 15 minutes for the front, back and button stickers.

One thing to note as well, this skin makes my screen appear darker, but I don't know if that is because it's so drastic from the white color of the Kindle or a reflection of the dark skin or what. It still has a nice contrast to the eInk screen and is readable without any problems...just the device itself is much darker to look at and takes a little adjusting to get used to.

The seller, mygift, sent this skin wrapped in plastic inside a sturdy cardboard sleeve/envelope with a stiff cardboard insert to keep it from getting bent in the mail. I purchased this because I was surprised to find my A filter kit in a box from the long ago 35mm era (series A was what was available then for amateurs from Cokin). My filter holder was exactly like this, but, it had rust on it (from an old film developing tank) that was hard to remove completely. This is exactly the same item as the one of yore--this was made in France, as well. (I ordered the requisite 58mm ring for my Fuji S9000, as well, from here, also.)

Anyway, other users report vignetting in certain situations with digital cameras. The plastic is of a better quality than we're generally used to now. From what I've heard, I would purchase the Z-series nowadays--it's filters are wide enough better to avoid vignetting (blackening the outside edges of a photo because the filter holder or lens hood(s) partially blocks the camera's view).

I would not recommend others get started with the A-series--the filters are too small always to avoid vignetting, and, it's being discontinued by Cokin, so purchasing further filters/replacement parts in the future will be difficult.

Cokin filters are part of a filter system (from Cokin's series of differing filter sizes) that uses a specialized Cokin filter holder held to camera lenses by rings that correspond to and fit differing filter thread sizes--so, the system includes its own lens caps, lens hoods, etc.--the ones that fit on the cameras' lens threads will not work with the holder installed.

Cokin filters are high-quality specialty, and, easily interchangeable, plastic plate filters of many types (gradient, diffused, colored, star, polarized, etc.)--some very novel--that explains Cokin's enduring popularity over many decades....

I am very pleased with this skin. It went on easily and is staying on. I have had it on for about 2 months and not a single pealing corner.

I agree with the first reviewer, this skin looks sharp with the red cover, M-edge Genuine Leather Executive Jacket for Amazon Kindle 1 (Marbled Red). They are slightly different shades of red but not enough to make a difference to me.

One thing to watch for... when it arrived I was surprised to see that the red on the side is striped. It is my fault for not seeing it in the image. After returning to the image, I could see them. Still not very clear but it is there none the less. The striping ranges from a heather gray at the top and each successive stripe gets darker until it reaches black about halfway down the side.

The skin also comes with a bonus skin for the charger. Personally, I don't think it is as pretty as the actual skin for the Kindle. It is just red and white stripes. Maybe it looks better on the charger but I chose not to put it on.

On the screen of the Kindle in the image is a matching screen saver. Printed on the excess stickers is a code you can use to download the screen saver from the manufacturer for free. The directions for how to both download the image and set it up on the Kindle were easy to follow.

The ILIAD Reader is of a very poor quality indeed. This is a very, very expensive piece of kit that as an electronic reader fails on every level:

1) It is TERRIBLY SLOW: it takes for ever to get started, for ever more to find the book you need, and like a tortoise when it comes to turning pages!

2) It is big and heavy: most unconfortable to hold in your hand,bulky to carry with you around.

3) It is very temperamental: I had problems with it from the begining as it would not be recognised by my computer. Also, when you are out there and in the middle of your reading experience...it all of a sudden friezes for no reason!

4) It is supposed to work with mobipocket: forget it, if what you want to use it for is books with tables and graphics (like medical books, for example), as these apppear SO SMALL that you will not be able to read them!

5) It is supposed to work with Adobe: again out of luck here, as very often the writting on the adobe documents is quite packed and small. You then need to blow it up... sounds simple?..well, IT IS NOT. You will be forever struggling with the stupid system the Iliad reader uses for this, that blows up the page you are viewing...leaving on sight only one section of it at a time. The problem is that a lot of the time you end up with the wrong bit of page! And on and on you struggle to get that right, which TAKES FOR EVER (very slow this machine...remember?) AND consumes all the battery.

6) And last, but not least, THE CUSTOMER SERVICE IS AWFUL: you will be confronted with a totaly inpersonal system whereby your questions go into anebulous cibernetic territory from which you get thrown back a reply that comes about one week later, signed by an anonymous assistant (you will NOT deal with a person), that will give you a very general reply and will not accept any responsability. And the more inpatient you get, the thicker the wall that isolates you from 'them', the more delayed the answers, the more unsuported you feel (YOU ARE).

And all of this at an outrageously expensive price! When I bought it I naively assumed the high price would be buying me high quality!!!

At least you won't be able to say that nobody warned you...

There's not much else to expect from Cole Haan, I've used their products for years now. So, when I saw this beautiful Kindle cover, I bought it! It's a goldish-bronze, not a reddish color that the name would imply, it is a bit ligther than it appears on my monitor, but it's still lovely.

It is well padded and the hinges are easy to insert and remove, which is important to me because it's not a light cover by any means. I take it off when I'm reading in bed so that I can balance the Kindle in my left palm and reach the page keys with the same hand.

I put it back into the cover when I'm not using the Kindle or when I take the Kindle out. It fits nicely in my handbag (a rather large handbag, lol) and when I'm waiting in line or have a few extra minutes, I can pull it out and read. I've had a couple of people stop me already asking about the cover, it's really striking.

As another reviewer stated, it's well padded, so I believe it will protect my Kindle well, even though I haven't dropped it YET. :D

I wanted to design my own web sites for my two businesses. So I bought MS Frontpage and a couple of books to teach me how. I'd never done any web design before. This book seemed most to the point, so it was the first one I started with.
After having read four more books on the topic, I can speak with some authority on which ones are good and which ones not.

Although this book isn't the worst one of the bunch, ("Absolute beginner's guide to creating web pages" is), it isn't much good either.

The layout is pathetic:- The book follows no logical order and one has to jump to this chapter and then to another one.

It is also short on step by step instructions, which makes it clear that the book was not written with novices, such as myself, in mind. At the same time it isn't authoritative, which means I had to spend a good deal of time searching the internet for answers which I think should have been in the book.

In the end I gave up because I felt that this book wasn't helping me at all.

Luckily for me, I'd also ordered " Build your own web site" by David Karlins (ASIN/0072229535), which had me up and running in no time at all. The funny thing is that Karlin's book has an almost overwhelming amount of information more than this book, even though it is only 222 pages, compared to 347 pages.

The information in Karlins' book is much more useful, and arranged much more logically.

After having spent hours struggling to find the relevant bits in "Faster Smarter", I gave up and took some aspirins. I went back to the PC, armed with "Build your own Web site" and in a short period of time I had a functional web site. And to me that is all that matters.

First of all, this played perfectly on a Windows 7 machine, so it will work on Vista. Yep, all of the first 6 editions are here, fairly nicely accessible through the Adobe PDF interface. This hard drive works flawlessly, so I gave it 5 stars despite the intrusive software. A nice external hard drive with some unique features, but the intrusive software might bother some users. There aren't a lot of choices for Firewire 800 drives for mac users, and this is certainly a sound offering with about twice the performance of the USB 2.0 connection.

Performance:
Doing some file writes by dragging large files and folders to the HDD, the USB 2.0 write times averaged about 35 MB/s and the Firewire 800 transfer times were about 63 MB/s, so it is definitely worth using Firewire 800 over USB 2.0. Power consumption is low and the drive is reasonably quite. It has no loud fans, but you do hear regular hard drive noises.

Usage:
Why is the software intrusive? WD decided to use a "virtual CD" that mounts whenever the hard drive is mounted. Also, use of their WD SmartWare program is required to use the drive. They do provide a tool to disable their software on some drives, but that doesn't work on the My Book Studio drive.

The drive was easy to setup and came pre-formatted as OS X Journaled. All I had to do is change a couple settings so the WD SmartWare software wouldn't open every time the drive mounted and change the label on the display on the drive to what I wanted. I use it as a Time Machine drive, which is setup by running Time Machine and selecting the My Book drive as the backup drive. Drive worked pretty flawlessly for a little over 1 year, used on a daily basis, and avoided moving it around to prevent damage to the drive while it was in operation. However, one day when I turned on my computer, it had difficulty detecting the drive. I was able to create a connection, and load up my music, which would play through a random amount of music, and then freeze up. Further investigation revealed a hideous amount of bad sectors, (well over 200,000!) which is a ridiculous number to get overnight. Not sure what caused the problem, but I will be sending in for a replacement unit from WD, as it is apparently still under warranty. As a side note, my unit was purchased from Circuit City, August 2008. I just got my cover by Fedex today, having purchased the item on Saturday using standard shipping.

The first thing I noticed was that the construction quality was quite high. The leather is a bit stiff, but it is fresh out of the box so that is to be expected. It looks great.

I did have a little bit of difficult in getting my Kindle into the hinge, mostly because my hands were frozen from being outside for a while. I'd say it took no more than two minutes to get it on. If you need help, the instructions that come with it are more than adequate.

The packaging is pretty spartan with enough to get you the cover in pristine condition and a small instruction pamphlet (which surprisingly had less advertising than I've seen in a lot of other packaging!) No material is wasted, which I'm sure both cuts down costs and is more environmentally responsible.

I don't have the booklight so I can't comment on how well it fits in, but there is definitely space for it. I spent a few minutes reading with it, and it seems to be very comfortable.

It's the same price as Amazon's Kindle cover right now ($30.00), and it definitely seems the better investment when compared to the Amazon covers I've seen other people had.

I was hoping to compensate for the lack of a backlight on my PRS-505 Sony Reader. Unfortunately, this product fails miserably and was a big disappointment. Set this drive up on a wireless N router. Only seems to transfer data at 2-3Mbps over a 150Mbps link max, so the Gigabit Ethernet is not necessary. I have Linux, Mac OSX, and Windows 7 on the network and the drive integrates them all pretty well. Linux works well with NFS mounts, MAC time machine backups work great. Windows 7 is able to access shares with password protection, but MAC is not. MAC can access public shares ok. Video playback on MAC does not work with native media player, but VLC player works good. I have a subversion repository set-up on the drive and it works great over NFS on a Linux client.

The only "issues" for me is that MAC cannot seem to access password protected shares and the only external USB mass storage devices that seem to mount automatically are VFAT partitions. It is possible to mount an external ext3 partion manually by enabling ssh and logging into the device as root. Hopefully these issues will be resolved in a future update.
